Aunt Olivy's Ole Time Lye Soap
"I shore have cleaned up a whole lot of people, also dogs, cats, floors, and a whole bunch of kids mouths that talked ugly to their mamma!
Stirring the pot .
. . . . . .
Aunt Olivia brewing up another pot of wonder soap, or as we call it, Ole Timey Lye Soap. Yep, we had to go get the fat from the butcher house, then cut it up in small pieces, place it in a larger pot, fire up the wood, and cook the grease til you have cracklings. The next thing is to strain off the tallow, then go get the salt, and bust yore gut eating those delicious cracklings. Now, she has added her lye, water and tallow, and the chore of stirring and getting warm by the fire is a three hour process, until the soap thickens. After the soap cools a little, different fragrances are added to make you smell like flowers, or you can use it without fragrances and there is virtually no scent. Then it is poured off into a square box, cooled and cut into bars.
We sell quite a bit of soap to the deer hunters because they want to be unsmellable in the woods. They tell us it works, and that they also wash their hunting clothes in it before they go into the woods.
Many people don't know the value of lye soap. It retains glycerin, which occurs in the mixing of the fat, lye, and water, and this is a natural skin softening agent.
Aunt Livy cooks her soap off at some of the South's major craft shows, where she demonstrates the process, answers questions, and sells her soap. She also gives demonstrations at schools. Give her a call, but be patient, she may have to climb up that telephone pole to talk to you, cause the phone people ran out of line, so they had steps put on the pole for us to get and make our calls. Kinda tough in cold and rainy weather!!
Aunt Livy's lye soap can be ordered by e-mailing the fragrance and amount you want, then we will respond with the amount of money you need to send. The soap sells for $2.50 a bar plus shipping. Available fragrances are rose, honeysuckle, lavender, lemon, and of course natural.
Due to heavy orders, all scents will not be available at all times. Please e-mail us and we will tell you what scents we currently have in stock. We-re sorry for the small inconvenience.
